In this deeply inspiring episode, I speak with Joyce Azzam. Born during the Lebanese Civil War in Beirut, Lebanon, Joyce and her family had to flee their home multiple times in order to survive, often taking refuge underground.

Originally taught to fear nature and all its potential dangers, a headstrong, teenage Joyce decided to accompany a friend on a hiking trip, which ultimately opened her eyes to a new world and fuelled the fire for exploration and mountain climbing.

Armed with the catchy slogan, “mountains are my mentors,” she took travelling to a new level, striving to become the first Lebanese woman to have climbed 26 mountains around the world.

Recently, Joyce successfully completed the 7 Summits Challenge, climbing seven of the world’s highest mountain peaks. On top of all this, she has studied hard for her three master’s degrees, in Interior Architecture, Governance Models & Management of Local Public System and Conservation of Historic Cities and Buildings.

She has smashed her inherited cultural female stereotype, and laid out a clear message, that anyone can live out their dream coining #YESYOUCAN as an initiative to motivate others, particularly young women, in achieving their goals.
