When everyone around us is living stationary lives, it’s hard to imagine there is another way. But if you’re born with a longing for adventure, staying in one place can feel like torture.

Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing.

If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together.

In this episode, I had one of my favourite conversations to date, with the beautiful Elayna Carausu. Elayna and her partner, Riley, have been sailing around the world and filming their lives for their incredibly popular YouTube channel, Sailing La Vagabonde, since 2014. With 1.35 Million subscribers watching their weekly videos, Elayna, Rilley and their adorable toddler son Lenn, let the world into their adventure, as well as their daily lives.

Elayna always knew she was meant to live a different kind of life. Growing up in Australia, she fell in love with the ocean, which inspired a sense of wanting more. Exploring her love of the open sea, Elayna experimented with scuba diving, freediving and eventually sailing. When she took a job for a summer in Greece, she met Riley, who shared a similar view of the world. After returning to Australia, she consulted with a few friends that convinced her to take a chance and join Riley back in Greece. The rest, as they say, is history.

I chat with Elayna about some of the incredible things she’s seen on the adventures with her family. The most memorable one being sailing Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic to the UN Climate Summit. Greta wrote her now-famous speech while with Elayna, Riley and Lenny on that epic journey on the sea.

We explore what it means to live the kind of life you really want, and what comes with those decisions. She tells me what it’s like to be a mum of a toddler while living on the open ocean. We also touch on how she manages to take care of herself in this alternative lifestyle that she and her family make look like a joyful, wild ride.

Other great bits of our conversation:

  • How Elayna always felt like an outsider growing up
  • Her chance opportunity to move to Greece
  • The funny story of how Elayna and Riley met
  • The camera that started it all
  • The story of their very first video
  • How Elayna handles self-care on the boat
  • The epic story of sailing Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic
